Main Character, Supporting Role, or Just an Extra.


Have you ever walked into a room and felt like the world tilted just slightly in your direction?

Like the lighting hit just right and the universe had handed you the lead role for the day? And then, the next week, you’re in a different space and suddenly, you’re not the lead, you’re not even in the supporting cast.

You’re more like… an extra in the background of someone else’s story. 
Sometimes life hands you the spotlight. Maybe it’s your birthday. Maybe it’s the role you play in your family, in one of your friendship groups.

Maybe you’ve just walked into a room where your energy lights everyone up. In these moments, we shine. We lead. We inspire. And it feels good, it feels natural. And it’s not about ego. It’s about being in alignment with the moment, feeling seen and heard, and leaning into your strengths. 


Other times, though you’re the steady hand behind someone else’s success. You feel like the supporting character. You’re the friend helping with wedding plans, the sibling showing up for a birthday, a graduation, the colleague backing someone’s big idea. This isn’t second best, it’s a vital role. Every good story needs strong supporting characters who bring depth, compassion, and loyalty. These moments allow us to love others well and practice humility, teamwork, and generosity. 


And then there are days you show up and… no one really notices. You’re there, but not essential to the plot. You feel like an extra, a nobody. Maybe it’s in a friendship group, or a professional setting, or even a social event where you are there but you wonder if anyone even notices. It’s easy to feel small in these moments, but extras are part of the story, too. They fill the world out. They make the scene real.

And often, being an extra gives us space to listen, observe, and learn. 
We live in a world obsessed with being seen, being the Influencer, being the main character, and the thought that you might be an extra sometimes hurts.

I understand as someone who is slightly quieter who doesn’t have main character energy a lot of the time, it can be hard to sometimes feel like you are an extra in the story.

But real connection, growth, and fulfillment often happen in the quieter moments, the quieter roles.

Recognising that your value isn’t tied to how much spotlight you’re in is a game changer. And it took me until my 30s to really accept that my identity, my value does not depend on how many main character days I have.

There is power in knowing who you are, regardless of what role the moment calls for. 


Life is dynamic. You’ll shift in and out of roles as naturally as scenes change in a film.

What matters most is not whether you’re the lead or the extra, but whether you show up with authenticity, grace, and kindness in whatever role you’re playing that day. So whether today hands you a script or just a silent walk-on part own it.

You’re still in the story.
