The Last Day of High School, an End of an Era (Again) sarah, October 26, 2025 This morning, I stood in the driveway and watched as my child drove off on their own for their very last day of high school. I’ve been here before. When our oldest finished, and I dropped her off for her last day. I remember that feeling, how time moves so quickly, I think back to the quiet car ride home, the realisation that a whole chapter of their childhood had just closed. I thought maybe it would feel easier the next time. It doesn’t. There’s something so bittersweet about watching them drive away, independent, capable, ready for the world, yet still somehow that same little person, nervous on their first day, the one who needed help to tie their shoes and help pack their lunch I had imagined packing their lunch for the last time (but it never happened as they won an award the night before and received a tuckshop voucher). The same child who once clung to my hand as they walked into school in those first days of school and now barely looks back as they head off into their next adventure. Each child’s journey is different, and so is each goodbye to school. The memories flood in, early mornings, lunch boxes, uniforms, school photos, drama nights, the chaos and the laughter that filled those years. It all went by far too quickly. I know I still have two more children’s schooling to go, and each journey will be different. I know when our youngest finishes primary school at the end of the year, I’ll feel this again. Each milestone reminds me not just how much they’ve grown, but how much I have too, learning to let go, little by little. So this morning, as the car disappeared down the road, I stood there a little longer than usual. Proud. Emotional. Grateful. Because even though each ending feels different, they all carry the same truth, I was there for it all and am so thankful that I was.
