The Weight of Being Forgotten sarah, May 13, 2025May 13, 2025 It was a simple moment, one that had happened before, and no doubt will happen again. I sat in a group of parents, watching my child compete, a tray of hot drinks handed out with care. Except… mine never came. Forgotten. Again. Not out of malice, just… unnoticed. And somehow, this time it hit harder than it should have. In that quiet moment, I felt something I’ve whispered to myself more times than I care to admit, something I’ve known deep down but haven’t wanted to fully face. I am forgettable. Not in a dramatic, self-pitying way. Just quietly unmemorable. I am the quiet one, the one who is great in small conversations but often gets lost in the crowd. And in that moment of being overlooked yet again, a deeper question surfaced, one I’d been too busy, too tired, or perhaps too afraid to truly ask myself, If I’m forgettable, unmemorable….. does that mean I’m unimportant? As I grow older, I’ve noticed how it happens. Slowly at first, the way we, especially as women, begin to simply disappear. I went from being Sarah to being someone’s wife, then someone’s mum, and in my case, also always someone’s twin. Our names slowly replaced by our roles. Our stories slowly fading behind the needs of everyone else. It’s subtle. It doesn’t normally hurt… well, not at first. But then some moments that creep in and catch us off guard. Someone asking you, if you’re new, when you have been going there for months. Moments when you realise you’ve become part of the background, not because you chose it, but because no one looked up to see you. And it raises questions you try to silence:Do I not matter? Is it me? Is there something wrong with me? We laugh it off.We shrug. We say, “Oh, it’s fine. I don’t drink coffee anyway.”Because saying it out loud feels silly, maybe even selfish, to worry. Also to admit to people your insignificance. But the truth is, it’s not silly. It’s human nature. We all want to be seen. To be valued. We want to feel a connection with others, we want to matter. To be known, to be remembered. To feel like our existence matters, That’s what hurts… Not the forgotten coffee, not being unnoticed as you walk by in the shops, not being known as Someone’s mum, someone’s wife. But the quiet creeping fear that maybe we could disappear and all we would be remembered by is by what we did, not be who we were. We carry so much as women, but often we get forgotten in the process, by ourselves, by others. And for those reading this who have felt invisible — the quiet friend, the helper in the background, the mother or caregiver who blends into the scenery. I want you to know something. You are not alone. And you are not unseen. You have value. You are significant. Even when the coffee doesn’t come.Even when no one remembers your name.Even when it feels like you’re fading. You matter. You are still you. And maybe it’s time we start seeing each other better, offering a drink to the quiet ones, too. Not just out of politeness, but out of recognition. Let’s look up.Let’s notice.Let’s remember each other. Because being seen is not a luxury. It’s a need. And it starts with each of us.
